Super Smash Bros. was made to be a party game something for the whole family to enjoy. This isn’t different from how it is now but with any other game with fighting involved, people wanted to compete and see who is best. This came into being tournaments for games in this series.

The biggest Smash Bros. and what started the competitive scene was Super Smash Brothers Melee. As any other fighting game people wanted to get better than others, play the best character and have fun. The more people played the more refined the game got. People found that in Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 64 also could be played competitively. Then people found combos they could do. Then people found frame data, hit boxes, different ways to move, different ways to dodge hits and so much more.

It became this big thing that it wasn’t supposed to be and for the longest time not like, and still might not like, by Smash Bros. creator. Their tournaments hidden in the shadows most of the time until a few years ago with its addition to the biggest fighting game tournament scene.
