It’s that time of year again. The nominations. The snubs. The A-list stars. The fashion. The acceptance speeches. It’s award season.
The 2012 award season officially started on Sunday, January 15 with the Golden Globes. The Golden Globes give recognition to the best of film and television, which was hosted by comedian Ricky Gervais this year. The top movie winners were “The Descendants” for Best Drama Film and the silent film, and “The Artist” for Best Comedy film. The top television winners were “Homeland” for Best Drama Television Series, and “Modern Family” for Best Comedy or Musical Television Show. Actor Ryan Gosling was noticeably absent, despite being nominated for 2 awards. The Golden Globes highlighted many accomplishments of 2011, and also gave insight in who might win an Oscar.
The next award show was the Screen Actor’s Guild awards (SAG for short), which was on Sunday January 29th. This award show is all about acting in both film and television, with the highest award being the Best Ensemble cast. “The Help” dominated the awards show, winning Best Female Supporting Actor (Octavia Spencer), Best Female Actor (Viola Davis) and Best Ensemble Cast in a Motion Picture. The Best Ensemble in a Comedy Series went to “Modern Family” and Best Ensemble in a Drama Series went to “Boardwalk Empire.” Alec Baldwin won Best Male Actor in a Comedy Series for the sixth year in a row for his role in “30 Rock”. The winners of both the Golden Globes and SAG awards are typically shoo-ins for the Oscars, which would mean that Supporting Actor would most likely go to Christopher Plummer and Supporting Actress would be Octavia Spencer (but don’t take my word for it, that’s just a guess).
Next up are the SAG awards is the British Academy of Film and Television Awards (BAFTA for short). This award show will be held on February 12th. The BAFTA’s is England’s equivalent to the Academy Awards. The movie “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” has the most nominations with 12.
Last, but certainly not least, is the most anticipated award show, the Academy Awards (also known as the Oscars). The Academy Awards will be on Sunday February 26 this year, and hosted by actor Billy Crystal (originally it was supposed to be Eddie Murphy, but he dropped out). It will be Crystal’s ninth time hosting the Academy Awards, as he previously hosted the 1990-1993, 1997,1998, 2000 and 2004 Oscars. Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo” leads with 11 nominations and “The Artist” is close behind with 10 nominations. Actress Meryl Streep received her record-breaking 17th nomination for her role as Margaret Thatcher in “The Iron Lady”.
It looks like award season 2012 is guaranteed to be an exciting one.
