The republican candidates who are racing to be on the ballot for the 2012 election are Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, Ron Paul, and Rick Santorum. The race is an uphill battle and so far has been stressful enough to prompt some candidates to drop out from the race. Previous candidates were Rick Perry, Michele Bachman, and Herman Cain.

Candidate Mitt Romney is sixty five years old and has been in politics all his life. His father was the governor of Michigan so he has a strong background in the area. He attended Harvard Business and Harvard Law school and acquired a law degree and an M.B.A.

Sixty nine year old Newt Gingrich attended Tulane University in 1971 and graduated with a PhD.  His career took a turn when he was involved in an ethics scandal in 1995, and in 1998 he was pushed to resign as a result of media stress from the Clinton scandal.

Rick Santorum attended Pennsylvania State University and was a senator for Pennsylvania from 1995- 2007. He strongly opposes  gay marriage and has condemned legal abortion.

Ron Paul was a doctor in the U.S. Air Force and the National Guard. He holds many Libertarian party beliefs but is a registered Republican. He supports personal liberty and opposes laws and actions against individual rights.

The fluctuation of the voters has been showcased through the different outcomes of the primaries. Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, and Newt Gingrich have all won separate primaries and Ron Paul has only been a few points behind. It will be interesting to see the outcome of the race.

There is no front runner at the moment which creates a large amount of tension among the candidate. Experts say that this race will continue on through June because of the indecisiveness that the voters have shown so far. At the moment, the competitors are focused on the closed Republican primary in Florida.

With the Florida victory comes a number of delegates, plus a running start due to Florida’s “swing state” status. Be sure to tune in to the results on January 31, 2012.
