Soulcalibur 5, is the 6th major installment in the soul series and is quite possibly the best Soulcalibur ever. The Soulcalibur franchise started in 1996 under the title “Soul Edge,” receiving mainly positive reviews and sparking the franchise’s multiple sequels. Soulcalibur 5 is a sequel that definitely doesn’t disappoint with features such as character creation, live matches, quick battles, an arcade mode, a level up system, plus a rich story plot expanding on from earlier titles.
After Soulcalibur 4′s large lack of story, project soul, the developers in charge of the Soulcalibur games decided add a story revolving around a son of a previous character, Sophitia(who is absent from SC5), named Patroklos. In the story Patroklos searches for her long lost sister Pyrrha who was kidnapped by the servant of the evil Blade Soul Edge when she was only 3 years old. The plot to this story is simply amazing for a fighting game as it has many plot twists and turns. The story surprises the player even more by featuring amazingly detailed cut scenes that further help the story progress. Although, even with these improvements, the game still has it’s down sides. With nearly impossible final battles, new players and unseasoned Soulcalibur players are sure to become frustrated
One key factor to every part of the Soul series is the classic arcade mode. This game play is based on a classic 6-stage series of battles a player must pass through while trying to use as little time as possible to rank on the high-score list. Soulcalibur 5 expands on the idea by adding 4 different types of arcade modes. The first version of arcade mode, is of course, the original arcade mode started in soul edge where one battles a random selection of 5 characters leading up to a fated battle with the Azure Knight, Nightmare. Two more selections for arcade are the Europe and Asia courses. In these courses one battles a random six characters from the region of the world listed in the title. The final mode is a standalone version known as Legendary Souls which is a 7 stage format including harder difficulty enemies, making this mode a challenge even for veteran players.
A new addition to Soulcalibur 5 is the ability to create a personalized player card, as well as a level up system. In player card customization, players can choose a picture and title to give themselves a little personalization to the online and offline features. As for the new levels, they are formatted utilizing experience. This new format allows the payer to gain experience points (exp) by winning battles which allow you to unlock the next level. In order to unlock the titles, one can do many things to do so. One way is to take on computer enemies in a mock online format in quick play or actual online matches where defeating the enemy character unlocks the title for your use. Another way to unlock titles is to do the story mode and/or level up. Doing the story mode unlocks story based titles only available to unlock if you actually do the story. Plus, every time a player levels up they receive a title as a reward.
One big factor to Soulcalibur 5 are the character creations. Originally introduced in Soulcalibur 3, character creation allows one to either customize an exsisting character or create an entirely new one from scratch. The gamer can alter things from hair style and color to muscle size and density. Also, the mode contains hundreds of different types of clothing to dress your fighter from armor-clad to a large kitty costume. One may also change the colors of anything from the skin to the blade.
Soulcalibur 5 is defintely worth those many dollars it takes to buy. The game has some problems but they are overshadowed by the large list of advantages. With all the features listed above and much more, it is sure to keep you entertained for many many hours of sword fighting fun.
